Description

Opus One wines are renowned for their elegance, complexity, and balance, offering layered aromas of dark fruit, floral notes, spice, and subtle oak, with structured yet supple tannins and long, graceful finishes.

2021 Vintage

The 2021 Opus One exhibits a deep ruby/purple color with a highly expressive bouquet of cassis, black cherry, and blue plum, accented by violet, lavender, fresh sage, and sweet tobacco. Subtle layers of graphite, cedar shavings, cocoa nib, and warm baking spice add depth and dimension to the nose. On the palate, it is smooth, polished, and impeccably balanced, revealing flavors of ripe blackcurrant, red plum, blackberry, and pomegranate, complemented by licorice, black tea, mocha, and fine herbal complexity. The tannins are satin-like yet structured, supported by bright acidity that provides lift and precision. Nuances of crushed stone, bay leaf, and vanilla bean emerge as the wine evolves, culminating in a long, graceful, and persistent finish. This vintage is expected to age gracefully for up to 30 years 2022 Vintage

The 2022 Opus One offers a charming and sophisticated profile with primary aromas of blueberry, cassis, and dried rose petals, underpinned by olive, cigar box, and graphite. The palate features bright red-fruit flavors, cocoa, and fresh orange peel, harmoniously integrated with fine-grained tannins and juicy ripeness. The finish is long and elegant, with hints of wet stone, vanilla, and a touch of coffee, signaling excellent aging potential. The blend consists of Cabernet Sauvignon 80%, Petit Verdot 8%, Cabernet Franc 6.5%, Merlot 5%, and Malbec 0.5%, aged for 18 months in 20% new French oak

Historical Vintages

Earlier vintages, such as those from the 1980s and 1990s, display mature characteristics with tobacco, toast, and complex red fruit notes. These wines often show firm, dry wood tannins, elevated acidity, and a concentrated, structured palate. Aromas of dark fruits, tobacco, and subtle spice are common, with a long, expressive finish that reflects the vintage conditions and extended aging in 100% new oak

Summary

Opus One consistently delivers wines that are layered, nuanced, and harmonious, combining ripe dark fruits, floral and herbal notes, subtle spice, and integrated oak. The wines are full-bodied yet elegant, with supple tannins, bright acidity, and long, persistent finishes, making them highly age-worthy and reflective of both the Napa Valley terroir and the house style established by Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild
